Okay, that is just a fancy way of saying applesauce, but if you have diet restrictions and are missing the taste of a homemade apple pie, try making some spiced applesauce instead. My family literally fights over the dish when I bring it to holiday events, and I always make sure to make some for the Christmas gift baskets. It tastes just like apple pie filling, and without the crust is a lot easier on the diet. Even low carb dieters can enjoy a helping of spiced applesauce with their holiday meal.
Spiced Applesauce
7-8 medium sweet apples, such as Cameo or Honey Crisp
¼ cup sugar, optional
2 teaspoons cinnamon
½ teaspoon cloves
¾ teaspoon nutmeg
Peel, core and slice the apples, and then place them in a medium-large pot with about ½ cup of water. Add spices and sugar if desired; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until apples break apart easily with a spoon. Remove from heat and mash as fine as you prefer with a potato masher. Serve either warm or cold, and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a more authentic apple pie experience.
If you want to skip the homemade applesauce part, use unsweetened applesauce in a jar, or omit the sugar if using sweetened applesauce.
This is a classic holiday side dish in our family, and is an absolutely necessity with pork chops and mashed potatoes. I can hardly eat pork chops anymore without having spiced applesauce to dip them in.
