I assume that Cakesters are a cynical attempt to cash in on the grassroots foodie groundswell of popularity for whoopie pies and macarons. (Not macaroons - macarons, those colorful little French sandwich cookies.)
I'm not sure if I approve of this or not. I mean, I want to hate Nabisco for co-opting a movement towards delicious artisanal fresh cookies, and turning it into yet another pre-packaged branded "artificial food-like substance," in the words of Michael Pollan.
The problem is, THEY'RE JUST SO DANG GOOD.
Cakesters come in four varieties currently (I'm sure they will come out with more, if the brand succeeds). So far I have only tried these, Double Stuf Cakesters, and the regular Oreo Cakesters. They also have one with peanut butter filling, and one with "golden" Oreo cookies.
Put simply, Oreo Cakesters are a reinvention of the classic Hostess treats. They're like Hostess Cupcakes without that weird waxy top layer. Or like Ho-Hos, unrolled and turned into sandwich form. Only better.
The cookie manages to eerily transpose the smell and taste of a real Oreo cookie onto a slab of soft sponge cake. The chocolate flavor is entirely artificial, to be sure, but let's be honest. We love Oreo cookies, don't we? Obviously if you hate Oreos, then Cakesters are not for you. But if you love Oreos, then I'm pretty sure you'll at least be intrigued by these.
The texture is tender and soft, without any of the faults I half expected the first time I tried one. It isn't mushy, it doesn't tend to stick to the roof of your mouth, and it's light without seeming over-inflated or too foamy. It also doesn't drop too many crumbs, which is nice.
In fact, the cookie part most closely resembles the "cookie" in the classic ultra-cheap ice cream sandwich. That thing that is supposed to reference a graham cracker, if only vaguely, but that was long before it absorbed all the moisture from the ice cream.
If you imagine one of those ultra-cheap ice cream sandwiches, but filled with a shelf-stable "crème" filling instead of ice cream, then you have a pretty good handle on the Oreo Cakester.
The filling is not the same as what you get in a regular Oreo cooking. The Cakester filling is very similar to the stuff you find in the middle of a Hostess cupcake. It has that slight gritty texture, and the faint vanilla flavor.
Those whose greatest delight is to unscrew the Oreo will be disappointed here. I tried it, gently, and the whole thing just sort of fell apart. I guess you could use a butter knife to gingerly wedge the halves apart, but it seems like a waste of time. The great joy in unscrewing an Oreo lies in the way the filling will flake off if you lever it with your teeth, and that's not going to happen here.
I will say that while I prefer Double Stuf Oreos, the Double Stuf Oreo Cakester is a little too much of a good thing. The extra filling throws off the ratio too far. My advice is to stick to the regular Oreo Cakesters. Or to have an insulin injection handy.
