When I think of foods I really like, I always get that slogan from Chiquita Bananas in my head, “Chiquita bananas…quite possibly the world’s perfect food.” I think it could apply to Rice Krispies treats too. There are few quick and easy homemade treats I love more than Rice Krispies treats. While the regular kind are okay, my absolute favorite is Krispies with peanut butter. If left to my own devices, I can easily gobble up half a batch of those without even realizing it. They are just so delicious!
One of the criteria I have for homemade desserts is that they must be quick. I hate cooking and can think of a million things I would rather do than work over a hot stove to make a dessert. Rice Krispies can be made in 10-15 minutes, from start to ready to eat. I love that about them.
Nutritionally, there isn’t anything special about them, but at least they have some extra protein from the peanut butter, which can help to slightly assuage those guilty feelings.
You don’t just have to eat them plain, either. If you act quickly while they are cooling off, you can put sprinkles, small candies and other decorations on them. You can cut the whole batch into fun shapes with cookie cutters, or pour it into a shaped cake pan for fun designs. This can be great for a kid’s birthday party or a Christmas treat. While they are still hot, they can be shaped into virtually any design you choose, and you can even include food coloring to make funky colors or match a party theme.
Rice Krispies treats are an age-old classic that stood the test of time. They are one of my favorite desserts, and make a versatile treat that can be dressed up or down for any occasion.
